JANUARY 4, 2000

Representative James V. Hansen (R-Utah), expected to be named Chairman of the House Resources Committee today, has written a private, eight-page letter to President-elect George W. Bush, seeking to overturn prior decisions and regulations affecting the environment.

Some of Hansen's suggestions include relaxing a ban on snowmobile use in national parks, rescinding national monument designations, and blocking proposed regulations for limiting air tours over the Grand Canyon and hardock mining. Hansen has been at odds with the outgoing administration of President Bill Clinton on these and other issues.

The House Resources Committee has jurisdiction over Indian affairs.
