Salmon protection rules in effect
JANUARY 9, 2000

Regulations which call for fines of up to $20,000 for killing or harming threatened species of salmon went into effect on Monday.

The rules are supported by some tribes in the Northwest, whose cultural and economic livelihood often depends on the threatened or endangered fish. Others oppose them and have filed lawsuits against their enforcement.
