Forest Oil Co. of Colorado on Tuesday said it has discovered an oil well in Cook Inet near Anchorage that could produce 2,500 barrels of oil a day.

Oil production in Cook Inlet has been long declining. The region once produced 225,000 barrels a day, compared to 29,000 barrels a day now.

First production would occur by spring 2002, says Forest.

In related news, BP Exploration on Tuesday reported two "serious" oil spills on the North Slope. Estimates put the spills at 5,000 to 9,700 gallons.
