Bill threatens monument law

FEBRUARY 27, 2001

Representatives Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) and Jim Hansen (R-Utah) this week plan on introducing legislation that would amend the Antiquities Act of 1906 and require the President to consult with local leaders on monument decisions greater than 50,000 acres.

The move is seen as a direct attack on the monument designations made by former President Bill Clinton. A number of Republican lawmakers and Western Governors have criticized his decisions.

The President has broad powers under the Act to make designations. The Secretary of Interior makes the recommendations to the President.

New Secretary Gale Norton has said she will not try and overturn any of the Clinton monuments.
