FEBRUARY 27, 2001

On Thursday, Arizona Tufflite Inc., will close its pumice mine in the San Francisco Peaks in Arizona, considered sacred to a dozen or so tribes in New Mexico and Arizona.

The company and the Department of Interior came to an agreement last fall on stopping mining in the peaks. The company is being paid $1 million to stop mining but will be allowed to use pumice it has already extracted.

The company agreed to relinquish mining claims in the area. Tufflite will also level the land.
