FEBRUARY 28, 2001

Senator Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska), Chairman of the Senate Committe on Energy and Natural Resources and the chief author of a bill to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil development, plans on bringing Senators to his state at the end of March.

Other lawmakers and environmental groups on both sides of the issue also plan trips, hoping to convince the media and others that they know best about the issue. A similar proposal failed last year but drilling has the support of a number of Republicans and the Bush administration.
