MARCH 19, 2001 Its too early to tell what effect Secretary of Interior Gale Norton will have on the environment, but enviromental groups are reporting a surge in interest and donations since she was nominated for the position back in December. Republicans for Environmental Protection has seen interest in the group increase, allowing the group to hire three paid staffers. Previously, it only had one: executive director Jim Scarantino of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The League of Conservation Voters says it has seen a 10 percent surge in its large contributions of $1,000 or more. In the first two months of 2001 alone, the group has reached 55 percent of its fund-raising total. Norton has claimed environmental groups opposed her in order to "fill their fund-raising coffers."
