MARCH 19, 2001

The state of Washington on Friday filed its response to a lawsuit filed against it by tribes seeking to ensure protection of their fishing rights.

The tribes want the state to fix culverts they say impede spawning salmon. But the state says its the job of the tribes and the federal government to fix them.

A lawyer representing the tribes says there are few culverts on tribal land so the issue is moot. The lawyer also says even if the federal government has to clean up its own culverts, so does the state.
