MARCH 5, 2001 Should oil eventually be discovered and developed in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), Alaska's Congressional delegation is divided over how the state would benefit from lease money. Representative Don Young (R), Vice-Chairman of the House Committee on Resources, has introduced a bill to give 90 percent of the lease money to the state and the rest for the government. Senator Frank Murkowski (R), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resource, has introduced a bill splitting lease profits evenly. President George W. Bush projects that the federal government could receive $1.2 billion in lease bids. That figure is based on a 50-50 split, so Alaska would also get $1.2 billion, according to the Department of Interior. Get the Story:
