Tribe to crack down on leases

MARCH 9, 2001 The Crow Tribe of Montana on Wednesday said it will institute tougher standards on the leasing of its land to tribal members. The tribe is concerned that tribal members are exploiting the tribe's trust land. Tribal members can bid on leases to use trust land for grazing, farming, or other purposes. But some have been taking advantage of preferred bidding rates and then allowing non-Indians to use the land. The tribe wants to make sure the land it owns -- about 450,000 acres -- are used for the benefit of tribal members and will require potential leasees to prove they will work the land. The remaining 1.2 million acres owned individually by tribal members or the 170,000 acres owned by non-Indians won't be affected. Get the Story:
