Coal study to look at tribal lands

APRIL 13, 2001

The Environmental Protection Agency will conduct a study on coalbed methane operations and how they might affect tribal lands in Wyoming.

Specifically, the study will look at water issues arising from coalbed methane operations. During the methane process, water is pumped out but many companies don't treat the water when they release it back into the supply.

The EPA will look at alternatives, such as requiring operators to treat the water or reinject it. The results will be used for water permits on tribal land in the state.

Wyoming state officials, however, say it will impact their abilities.
