Prairie dog shooting banned
APRIL 24, 2001

The US Forest Service has instituted a seasonal ban on recreational shooting of prairie dogs in order to protect an area of Wyoming where black-footed ferrets will be introduced next year.

Prairie dogs are the primary prey of black-footed ferrets, once thought to be extinct. The government has been reintroducing the ferrets in an attempt to repopulate them.

The Fort Belknap Reservation in Montana is a reintroduction site. It is not affected by the Forest Service's ban on shooting.
