Gwich'in close Anchorage ANWR office

APRIL 27, 2001

The Gwich'in Steering Committee, representing the Gwichi'in of Alaska and Canada, is closing up its Anchorage office and consolidating in Fairbanks.

The reason cited is lack of support to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge up to drilling. Gwich'in leaders had said they would keep the Anchorage office open so long as drilling was a threat but now that Congress appears to be against development, the committee has decided to close it.

The Gwich'in, however, aren't giving up the fight against drilling. The Fairbanks office will continue their efforts.
