Norton releases condors into wild

APRIL 6, 2001 Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Thursday released six endangered condors into the wild in California. For Norton, her experience with the condor has been a long one. In her previous career, she was an associate solicitor in US Fish and Wildlife, the agency that made the still controversial decision more than a decade ago to capture existing six wild condors and try to restore their population. There are still just 54 wild condors left. The large birds were once plentiful but their numbers have been reduced due to human encroachment. Get Norton's Remarks:
