Former official denies fire warning

APRIL 6, 2001

In interviews and letters published in New Mexico media, a former Bandelier National Monument superintendent said his agency was never warned not to start the fire that ended up destroying thousands of acres of Pueblo land last summer.

Roy Weaver is denying Congressional testimony and widespread belief that he was warned not to start the fire. It ended up destroying about 200 homes and burned 48,000 acres in the Jemez Mountains.

Santa Clara Pueblo and San Ildefonso Pueblo were both affected by the fire.
