Groups sue to halt bison slaughter

Three environmental groups on Thursday filed suit against the state of Montana and the federal government in hopes of stopping bison in Yellowstone National Park from being killed.

Under a plan finalized last December, Montana Department of Livestock officials are allowed to kill bison which wander out of park boundaries and test positive for brucellosis. After two years of no kills, the state resumed its practice almost as soon as the agreement was signed.

In order to protect its livestock industry, Montana is designated brucellosis free. There has been no case of transmission of brucellosis from bison to cattle in the wild, however.
