A lake which the Coeur d'Alene Tribe has been fighting to clean up may lose its Superfund status, according to a recent Environmental Protection Agency actions.

In a draft letter to local officials, the EPA's regional administrator said the agency isn't worried that the lake threatens the health of humans and that the lake's beaches are safe.

Local officials want the lake and the Spokane River off the list. Local opposition got the St. Marie's log yard, located near the Coeur d'Alene Reservation, off the list in April.

The southern third of the lake is currently the subject of a Supreme Court case. Two courts have upheld the tribe's ownership but the state wants sole control.
