MAY 15, 2001

The State Department on Monday said it is opposed to a whaling expedition the government of Japan is currently undertaking.

The United States objects to plans to hunt sperm and Bryde's whales, both of which are protected under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act.

Three Japanese whaling crews last week set sail for the Pacific. The expedition is justified as scientified research, although whaling is a cultural tradition in the country.
