MAY 17, 2001

The Department of Interior today may be held in contempt of court but it won't be over the trust fund case.

A federal judge has given Bureau of Land Management officials until today to have ranchers remove cattle from 500,000 acres of public land considered vital to the desert tortoise. The Clinton administration made the deal but the Bush administration has yet to carry it out.

The tortoise is California's state reptile and is listed under the Endangered Species Act.
