MAY 22, 2001 At a press conference in Anchorage on Monday, drilling proponent Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) said alternative, renewable energy sources can't replace the oil to be found in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. According to Department of Energy statistics supplied by Stevens, it would take about 450,000 acres of solar panels, 3.7 million acres of wind projects, and up to 2 million barrels a day of corn-based ethanol fuel to replace the 1 million barrels of black gold in ANWR.
