MAY 24, 2001

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals is promising an expedited appeal on a lower court's decision to delay implementation of a ban on logging and road builing on 60 million acres of federal forest land.

The appeal has been initiated by environmental groups who were granted intevenor status at the federal court level in Idaho. The Bush administration has not yet said if it will join.

A federal judge said implmentation of the rules would cause irreparable harm. The state of Idaho, the Kootenai Tribe, a paper company, and other public and private groups filed suit to challenge the rules.
