JUNE 12, 2001

Former Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson last week was elected to the board of trustees of the National Resource Defense Council, an environmental group.

As a requirement for joining, Richardson has to agree to the council's principles, which include opposing nuclear weapons. He was formerly in charge of nuclear weapons for the federal government but a spokesperson for the council said that shouldn't disqualify him for membership.

There are 41 other trustees of the group.

Richardson is considering seeking the Democratic nomination for Governor of New Mexico. He'd face activist and actor Russell Means, the Libertarian nominee.
