JUNE 13, 2001

Now that nuclear waste storage foe Harry Reid of Nevada is number two in power of the Democratically controlled Senate, foes of the Yucca Mountain waste site are hopeful the project will be killed.

Yucca Mountain is the only site the Department of Energy is considering to be the natnional radioactive waste repository. Federal law mandates the government find a home for the waste.

Many residents near the site are against the project, which already contains some waste. A number of tribes in Nevada, California, Arizona, and Utah are also opposed.

There are some potential problems with Yucca's geology. The waste would have to be stored in tunnels following the geologic features of the mountain.
