JUNE 19, 2001

Secretary of Interior Gale Norton on Monday visited Arctic Village, a Gwich'in community whose residents oppose opening up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil and gas development.

Norton was welcomed by the village but was told repeatedly about the importance of the Porcupine caribou herd and why the Gwich'in believe development will destroy their culture and way of life.
