Park changing plans for minorities

JUNE 22, 2001 The National Parks Conservation Association has launched an effort to make national parks more accessible to minorities, especially African-Americans. As part of its campaign, the NPCA brought Rosetta Finney to the Biscayne National Park in Florida. Finney is chairwoman of one of the African bands of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma. Descendants of African slaves were made official members of the tribe in a treaty signed after the Civil War. Tribal members last year voted to restrict membership to those could prove Seminole Indian blood. The action would effectively eliminate many black Seminoles. Since the membership criteria involved changing the tribal constitution, the Bureau of Indian Affairs had to approve it. Former Assistant Secretary declined to accept the change. Get the Story:
