JUNE 26, 2001

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear a case affecting the water rights of tribes and private citizens in the Gila River basin in Arizona.

Two companies had asked the Supreme Court to review an Arizona Supreme Court case that classified certain water flows in the basin as surface. Surface rights are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis with tribes getting first priority.
