JUNE 27, 2001

Marine scientists on Tuesday failed to rescue an endangered North Atlantic right whale entangled in a fishing line off the coast of Massachusetts.

No further efforts to save the whale are planned at this time.

Scientists believe the whale will die unless rescued. There are about 300 known North Atlantic right whales in existence.
