Uranium IOUs not funded by Bush

JUNE 4, 2001

Money the federal government owes to Navajo miners, their families, and others affected by the production of uranium won't get any money under a supplemental budget request submitted by President Bush on Friday.

The Department of Justice has run out of money to fund claims filed by miners and "downwiders" from nuclear sites. Lawmakers from Utah and New Mexico have been pushing for Bush to provide enough money to fund the claims while a bill has been introduced to make claims an entitlement.

An entitlement would mean it is not subject to funding requests or budget limits.
