JUNE 5, 2001

Fire crews kept a 463-acre blaze on the Mescalero Apache Reservation in New Mexico at bay on Monday, reporting it 60 percent contained.

The crews fought high winds as nearby residents were allowed to return to their homes. The fire came within hundreds of yards of tribal businesses.

Arson is suspected as the cause. A task force is investigating 18 blazes which have been set on the reservation.
