JUNE 5, 2001

About 50 Democrats in the House and several Republicans are urging rejection of a $5 million budget proposal affecting drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The proposal, part of the Department of Interior's fiscal year 2002 budget request, wouldn't open up ANWR to drilling but authorizes study of leasing the area. The lawmakers wants a House subcommittee to get rid of the item when it considers the budget on Thursday.
