In a meeting held on Wednesday, Bruce Babbitt, Secretary of the Interior assured Santa Clara Pueblo and San Ildefonso Pueblo that legislation aimed to compensate victims of the Cerro Grande fire will not ignore their pueblos.

The fire damaged 15 percent of the Santa Clara land, threatening hunting grounds, economic livelihood, and cultural practices of the tribe. San Ildefonso land was also damaged by the fire.

Babbitt toured watershed lands owned by the U.S. Forest Service in New Mexico.
