Alaska Natives don't want off-shore pipeline

FRIDAY, JULY 20, 2001 Inupiat Eskimos on Alaska's North Slope may support oil and gas drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge but they are adamantly opposed to an off-shore pipeline. At a hearing held in Barrow on Thursday, numerous Eskimo leaders and organizations criticized plans a proposed pipeline from that would take oil from Prudhoe Bay through the Beaufort Sea to Canada. They fear it would hurt the whales they hunt in the sea. They also said the deal would provide little benefit for the state and less financial opportunities for them. Get the Story:
