Former Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbitt has been representing the Hearst family on a $200 million land deal in California which environmentalists will fear may destroy an area filled with rare plants and animals.

The family has been amassing land records dating back 100 years for the 83,000 ranch. The family says it isn't planning any development but the records are often used to negotiate development deals on otherwise restricted land.

Babbitt is representing the family through the Washington, DC, law firm of Latham & Watkins. He joined the firm after leaving office in January.
