Committee wants to subpoena Bush documents

WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2001

Disappointed with the lack of cooperation from the Bush administration, the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee is threatening to subpoena a number of Cabinet agencies to determine if industry interests had unfair influence over a number of recent decisions.

Senator Joe Lieberman (D-Conn.), chairman of the committee, has been requesting documents and correspondence from various agencies for the past few motnhs. He claims he has not received all the information he wants.

In particular, Lieberman is targeting the Bush administration's decisions affecting the environment. Since January, Bush appointees have suspended or rescinded a number of regulations approved by the Clinton administration.

If subpoenas are issued, they'd be the first under the Democrat-controlled Senate.

Democrats have also called for probes into Vice President Dick Cheney and his energy task force. Cheney's office has not been cooperating with General Accounting Office (GAO) requests for documents and information.
