JULY 26, 2000 After a request to hold a Shoshone Sundance in Grand Teton Park was rejected by National Parks Service officials, sponsors John Tarness and Bennie LeBeau received approval to hold the ceremony in neighboring Bridger-Teton National Forest. The National Park Service (NPS) rejected the application for Grand Teton citing environmental impact concerns which focused mainly on the removal of trees and the building of a road to the site for the approximately 500 expected participants. No Sundance has occured in the park since the tribe was confined to the Wind River Reservation in 1868. The relocated Sundance will be held from August 17-21. Get the Story:
