FRIDAY, JULY 27, 2001

The Sauk-Suiattle Tribe of Washington has called an interagency committee of various federal agencies to investigate the falling numbers of the mountain goat, a vital part of the tribe's traditional culture.

The goat has been used historically for food, materials and clothing. In recent years, the tribe banned hunting of the goat because the population around the North Cascades contained parasites.

The tribe will be collecting data on a local herd in hopes of getting federal funding for more studies.
