Groups seek bison slaughter records

MONDAY, JULY 30, 2001

Three environmental groups on Friday sued the Montana Department of Livestock for not producing records on the slaughter of bison that stray from the Yellowstone National Park.

The groups say the records should be made public under the state freedom of information act. They say the department has refused to grant them access to the documents.

In order to protect cattle from brucellosis, Montana officials are allowed to kill bison that wander out of the park. No case of bison-cattle transmission of the disease, which can cause cows to abort calves, has ever been recorded in the wild, however.
