JULY 31, 2000

Several fires threaten Indian Country in California, Arizona, and Washington.

A fire in the Cleveland National Forest has burned about 1,400 acres on the Pechanga Reservation in southern California. It began Sunday afternoon, with a cause unknown.

An 8,000-acre blaze burned on the Fort Apache Reservation in eastern Arizona this weekend. Improved weather conditions are expected to help the blaze today.

A 6,000-acre fire in the Columbia River Gorge has threatened a Yakama Nation sacred site. The fire is about 70 percent contained.

Meanwhile, the fire in the Mesa Verde National Park in southwestern Colorado was 100 percent contained over the weekend. The blaze consumed 24,000-acres of land in the park and on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation, but no damage was reported to the Pueblo villages.
