Mining contamination case wraps up

TUESDAY, JULY 31, 2001 A federal judge in Idaho on Monday heard closing arguments in the largest Superfund lawsuit brought to trial. The United States and the Coeur d'Alene Tribe are suing two mining companies to force them to help pay for cleaning up the Coeur d'Alene Basin. The government and the tribe have previously settled cleanup agreements with all but the two companies. The companies claim they are being unfairly targeted and should not have to foot the costs alone. The bill could run as high as $3 billion. Superfund status is being reviewed for Lake Coeur d'Alene, of which the tribe owns the southern third. Lawmakers and local officials oppose the designation. The tribe may support de-listing provided a plan is put into place to clean up the lake. Get the Story:
