Great Lakes drilling makes for strange friends

JULY 6, 2001

Republicans from the Great Lakes states are choosing whether to support the Bush administration's call for increased drilling or fall in line with anti-development sentiments back at home.

With the support of a number of Republicans from Michigan, the House last month passed a bill that prevents the US Army Corps of Engineers from issuing permits to drill in the lakes. Another Michigan-introduced bill would ban drilling until the National Academy of Sciences conducts a study of the potential impact.

Like a number of states, Michigan has a moratorium on off-short drilling. Governor John Engler (R) is proposing to lift it.
