Connelly: ANWR isn't empty

"Alaska's pro-development politicians see the coastal plain as an unattractive land of unrealized value. They refer to it by its initials, ANWR, pronounced 'An-wahr.'

The plain was once described as 'a flat, crummy place' by Harold Heinze, a former president of ARCO-Alaska. . .

Based on one memorable stop as we entered the plain, the Men of the Marsh Fork might be able to put a few details onto Murkowski's blank tableau. . . This was not an empty spot on the map, it wasn't flat, and it deserves a more respectful name than 'An-wahr.'"
