Navajo may lose livestock

AUGUST 2, 2000

Navajo tribal members whose livestock are overgrazing Hopi land may see some of their sheep and cattle impounded if they don't remove the offending animnals.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs is sending out letters to Navajo families who live on Hopi land regarding the overgrazing. The BIA and the Hopi Tribe say the families have 50 percent more sheep than their permits allow.

Hopi officials cited drought conditions for the increased concern on grazing.
