Agreement reached on species protection

THURSDAY, AUGUST 30, 2001

The Department of Interior and a coalition of environmental groups have come to an agreement on the protection of 29 plant and animal species.

US Fish and Willdife, a bureau of the Interior, will move as quickly as possible to protect the species, many of which are on the verge of extinction, if the environmental groups hold off on court cases involving others.

US Fish and Wildlife currently has a moratorium on listing new species because of a backlog of lawsuits. Environmental groups defend their suits, saying the government would let species die out unless citizens intervened.
