In a letter to the House and Senate, Vice President Cheney is rejecting an attempt by the General Accounting Office to obtain documents and records on his national energy task force.

The response comes after the GAO issued a "demand letter" to Cheney, the first ever to a President or Vice President. Cheney believes the GAO is exceeding its authority in requesting the information.

The GAO may take Cheney's office to court. Comptroller David M. Walker is considering litigation.

Reps. John D. Dingell (Mich.) and Henry A. Waxman (Calif.), the ranking Democrats of the Energy and Commerce and Government Reform committees, requested the GAO probe to determine industry influence over the task force, which Cheney headed.
