Fire threatens park again
AUGUST 7, 2000

Another fire is threatening the Pueblo villages and artifacts of Mesa Verde National Park.

The new fire, called the Pony Fire, has grown to 5,000 acres, and came within a mile and a half of some of the park's ruins as well as a warehouse containing many artifacts.

The fire caused the park to be closed almost immediately after it was reopened. The earlier Bircher Fire and the new fire have charred half of the 52,000-acre park.

The fire was sparked by lightning on the nearby Ute Mountain Ute Reservation.
