Army Corps to ease wetlands rules

THURSDAY, AUGUST 9, 2001

The Army Corps of Engineers is proposing to scale back wetlands protections rules implemented just a year ago.

The rules make it harder for developers to secure certain permits to fill wetlands. But the new rules would give developers more leeway.

The Environmental Protection Agency, the Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Office for Surface Mining had voiced objections to the proposed rules. The Corps agrees they are not as strict as the Clinton-era regulations but that they are tougher than the ones that previously existed.
