Age limit raised for firefighters

The federal government is raising the upper age limit on new federal firefighters from 35 to 37.

Current policy prevents the departments of Interior and Agriculture from hiring anyone over 35. But concerns over the shortage of firefighters and lobbying from union groups led to the change.

President Bush last month signed a law to increase the mandatory retirement age from 55 to 57, the same as federal law enforcement agencies.
