Alaska subsistence panel to meet
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2001

An 11-member panel convened by Alaska Gov. Tony Knowles (D) will begin meeting today in Anchorage to discuss a constitutional amendment to recognize a subsistence priority.

The group includes Native leaders who were part of Knowles' subsistence summit. The summit recommended the state change its constitution because it conflicts with federal law that upholds trust responsibilities to Alaska Natives.

Knowles is also pushing an amendment because he has dropped an appeal of the Katie John subsistence rights case.
