FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2001 The Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma has asked the Department of Interior to take over a former Army munitions site in Kansas that a developer wants to turn into a Wizard of Oz theme park. The tribe says the Interior can assert jurisdiction because the 9,065-acre Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant was declared excess in 1997. The Interior at the time could not have acted on behalf of the tribe because the tribe was still part of the Cherokee Nation. The tribe's separate status was acknowledged last year by an act of Congress. Get the Story:
