Bill threatens Amazon rainforest

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2001

Environmentalists are worried about a bill circulating through Brazil's Congress that will lift limits on logging the Amazon rainforest that is home to a number of tribes, some still unknown by Western society.

The bill, which is being supported by lawmakers from rural areas, would allow owners of Amazon land to use up to 50 percent of their land for development. Currently, only 20 percent can be used.

The measure would also strip a requirement that landowners replant deforested areas.
